TIL: lace cards

It’s a computer punch card with every possible spot punched out, so what remains is a flimsy filamentous net of paper that instantly tears and jams up the card reader.

Old-school denial of service attack.

In case you haven't heard, Red Hat is laying off people today, and I'm one of them. My 'career' as a Hatter lasted just over 15 months, much less time than I had planned or expected.

Many of you know me well, and know that I have extensive background in open source software, project management, open source business, and lots of related activities. If you're aware of any opportunities which may be of interest, feel free to send them my way via any channel you like.

Boosts much appreciated, of course, and thanks in advance!

My recent toot about the iconic lost Amiga work of pixelart from 1985, Jack Haeger's "Four-Byte Burger," received by far more reactions than any of my others.

YouTuber "Ahoy" has just posted a video in which he sleuths rather deeply and manages to recreate this wonderful piece, pixel by pixel, with apparently great accuracy.

It's an incredible process not to be missed!

I'm back!

I accidentally bricked my Akkoma/Pleroma install trying to updare it and have now heroically recovered it.

The year is 2023 and Jira's comment visual preview _still_ doesn't match the _actual_ rendered output after posting the perfectly crafted comment you wrote in text mode because the visual editor fails to achieve even the most basic of markup tasks.

Apparently Wordle has made its way into British daytime TV and infuriatingly none of the contestants know how to play it

So, just to avoid any confusion, when you run Windows 11, the product you are using is Windows 10. The Windows version is 2009 (which of course doesn't fall between versions 2008 and 2016, duh). So if you are using Windows Server 2022, the product is called 2022 but the version is 2009 because those two numbers seem like the same but they aren't.

The "Windows Current Version" for Windows 11 is 6.3. But don't use that number because Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 were also version 6.3. Windows 8 was 6.2.

Or if you want, just use build number 22621, also known as 22H2. The version 22H2 update is also called the "Windows 11 2022 update" because there never was a 22H1. But at least they changed their naming scheme and didn't call it Fall update because it was spring in half the world when it came out, heh.

The worst thing about Mastodon is that an ego-fuelled power-tripping instance owner can ban you if you disagree with them or post anything they don't like.
The best thing about Mastodon is that you can escape said ecomaniac by just using another instance.

If you're trying to find journalists on Mastodon, I've created a verified database of several hundred here: http://presscheck.org. Since the backlog has become enormous, the unverified waiting list is now public also: http://presscheck.org/pending

3D printers are magic!

Here's something I did this weekend that I couldn't find a quick and easy alternative for...
A custom-fit scotia/floor trim to go around the bullnose at the bottom of my stairs. Blended with filler and caulk prior to painting.

There is advent of code, but I am curious if there are similar things for technology that are not coding. I do plenty of code in my day to day work, but would be interested in like a paper a day or tech writing.

Searching for self-hosted ActivityPub single-user blog software
Show content
Anybody have first-hand accounts of self-hosted #activitypub single-user #blog software? I'm quickly running out of options that aren't just write my own...

Aiming for a git-backed markdown-based static site generator with AP support.

Tried #writefreely and was mostly impressed but annoyed by the subscription-only additions (comments, media/images, etc.)

Tried #plume and was disappointed it was not suited for single-user and also put off by how premature it was.

Do not want to touch #wordpress with the AP plugin

WAT DO?!

Optimistically thought I'd help out my house buyer by crimping the 24 CAT6A cables running through my house, to try and neaten up the overly-techy patch panel in the spare room.

First one and I'm giving up... I thought pass through connectors were the new hotness that would help make all of our lives easier?!
